My story
In 2010 I discovered sculpture. A friend took me to a workshop in serpentine stone. I went without expectations, but came back hugely enthusiastic. That was what led me to join a sculpting group under the guidance of Deventer sculptor and poet Jilles Waagmeester.
From him I learned to ‘chip’ and to look critically at my own work and the work of others. Working together with others in clay or stone is very inspiring to me. I love experimenting, chiselling, and watching an idea slowly take shape. Every day in my studio is different — and that’s exactly what I love about it.
My process
I love working in marble or hard stone — you have to put a lot of energy in to get something beautiful out. I always take plenty of time for a sculpture, both in the design phase and during the making. A marble or hard stone piece can take me more than six months.
I usually start with a clay model where I can experiment freely with shapes and proportions. The clay model is my guide in the early stages of chiselling — once the broad lines are set in the stone, I don’t look at it anymore.
“There is nothing like the feeling when a block of material slowly transforms into something beautiful under your hands.”
